How Deep the Father's Love

How deep the Father's love for us; how vast beyond all measure
That He would give His only Son to make a wretch his treasure

How great the pain of searing loss; the Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross; my sin upon his shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life; I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything; no gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ, his death, and resurrection

Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart; His wounds have paid my ransom.

This song, written by Stuart Townsend and performed by countless worship leaders (including Nichole Nordeman, Bethany Dillon, Phillips, Craig and Dean, and others), has become my heart's song lately. It brings tears to my eyes and chills each time I hear it or even read these words. I think the line I love most is "How deep the Father's love for us, how vast beyond all measure." I love the idea of the word "vast." It means boundless space! How amazing to think that God's love is boundless, never can be contained, has no way of ever ending!!! Yet then, there is the startling, chilling reminder "His dying breath has brought me life..."

Daily, I am reminded how deep God's love truly is. With each smile from my beautiful baby girl, each "I love you" from Trent, each "Thanks, Mrs. Allen" (yes, I do get them occasionally) from a student... I am reminded that God has a specific purpose and calling on my life. His dying breath brought me life so that I could glorify HIM! He paid my ransom so that I could live to worship him. I am HIS, and while I should never get "comfortable" in my salvation, I should be "comforted" knowing that I CAN boast in Jesus Christ.
